New Hitman game still in developement

Hitman fans can count on a new game in the series coming from IO Interactive despite indications that a Hitman game was canned last year.

A new Hitman game that was in development at Square Enix Montreal was cancelled in 2013, according to the CV of a senior game designer at the studio as reported earlier. But Square has moved to assure fans that a previously announced "AAA Hitman game" is still in development at IO Interactive.

"Io-Interactive is developing a new, AAA Hitman game that will be coming to PC and next-gen consoles and Square Enix Montreal is fully focused on mobile development of games some of which are related to the Hitman franchise," a Square rep told Polygon in response to the reports.

While this does confirm the continued support of the Hitman franchise, the statement doesn't deny that at least one Hitman title has been dropped.

"We look forward to sharing more details about these titles later this year."

As part of a restructuring effort at Square Enix last year, Rockstar veteran Hannes Seifert was appointed as full time studio head at IO Interactive to oversee development of "a new AAA Hitman project".

Meanwhile, Far Cry 3 exec producer Patrick Naud was to take on "a central leadership role" at Square Enix Montréal as the studio focused on smart devices.
