Xbox one will not support real names at launch

Xbox One won't support real names for Xbox Live accounts at launch, Microsoft confirmed toKotaku today. Microsoft previously planned to let users determine with whom they share their real name and Gamertag--however, all of the friends featured in a video demo earlier this week were identified solely by Gamertag.

An Xbox representative said real name identification is still planned for a later date.

"While real identities continue to be part of our plans for the experience on Xbox One, at launch, customers will continue to search for friends using their Gamertags," the rep said. "Our teams are working hard to deliver a quality experience for Xbox One. This means prioritizing some features and sometimes postponing others for a later update."

Though many dislike the idea of using real names to play online, Microsoft made it clear that sharing such information would be at the discretion of users. It could make it easier to parse the system's new 1,000-strong friends list, at the very least.

Are you interested in real names appearing on Xbox Live, or would you rather it stay delayed forever?
